Nicolai and Eve Riot were lucky enough to participate in the Shenanigans of the League of Supremely Evil Revolutionaries (LOSERs for short) during the convention!
This past weekend was the debut outing of the Cirque des Bêtes aerial and burlesque troupe! On January 16-19th our troupe was to be found aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA at the steampunk symposium hosted by Moche Productions. We performed 3 aerial/flow shows, one burlesque show, and a murder mystery as well as joining in in the general festivities.
All in all it was a fantastic debut that was well received by the steampunk community and we are excited to hopefully be present at more events this year as well as establishing ourselves further with other like minded artists.
Our aerial shows included silks, lyra, contact juggling, hooping, poi and fan dancing. Each artist did at least one number with our Ringleader Eve and Animal trainer Nicolai performing silly skits in between. Selia was both high flying and making objects fly while Igor stunned the crowd with his knowledge of gravity and spheres. Crocodile Tears seduced our audience with her smooth movements and Sapphire and Eve Riot both defied gravity. Nicolai proved that he could...eventually... be bribed into jumping through a hoop.
Our burlesque show was at the Friday night concert right after Lee Presson and the Nails! We went on at 11 pm that night, which was kind of a bummer because we were competing with the massively talented Unwoman as well as the spooky event hosted by Aiden Sinclair and Drake & McTrowell. However we had a great turn out for our short show, hosted by Nicolai! Selia Something wow the crowd with her flexibility and good humor. Crocodile tears lauded the joys of being evil and under the influence of other. Eve Riot made you want to pray on your knees and promise to never leave her again. And the daring Sapphire Starfire created the perfect piece of steampunk revelry-she really did just want to take off that damn corset.
Finally our murder mystery! Written by Crocodile Tears and investigated by Nicolai, the troupe of Cirque des Bêtes and several L.O.S.E.Rs acted out an opening night where things run afoul. We discover that a troupe of performers are a rather vicious group with drug addicts, kleptomaniacs, pyromaniacs, egomaniacs and a murderer most foul! Everyone hammed it up and in the end justice was found! Our audience was great at asking probing questions to get to the answer and we commend our sleuths for participating and giving us interesting solutions to read. In the end we awarded two prizes: one for the most creative (the detective was having an affair with the clown who wanted to be the headlining act? SHOCKING!) and one for the most accurate (the false mystic murdered her sister's murderer).
Finally to sum up the rest of this exhausting yet amazing weekend. Our troupe attended panels including parlor games, Cthulhu prayer, and female villainy. We shopped in the vendors hall, patronizing the leather and jewelry stands in particular. We danced: to chap hop by Poplock, to swing by Lee Presson & the Nails, to Gothic steampunk by Cirque Noir, to the Nathanial Johnstone Band. We drank tea and whiskey!
All in all, we had a very successful weekend and hope that this is a start to many beautiful friendships with the steam community!
